Coriander Chutney with Coconut

Coriander chutney with coconut is a great combination with Dosa, Idly and it goes even very good with lemon rice or tamarind rice also. I like any chutney with coriander or curry leaves. It tastes great. Another Coriander Chutney that is in the blog is just ground without any cooking. But this Chutney is done after sauté’ing the onion and coconut & finally adding the coriander leaves.

Ingredients

  • Onion – 1(medium size) or 1 cup chopped
  • Coconut – 1 1/2 Cup (Grated or Chopped fine)
  • Hing/Perungayam – 1/8 tsp.
  • Green chili – 2 (Reduce or Increase according to taste)
  • Tamarind paste – 1/2 tsp (Reduce or Increase according to taste)
  • Coriander Leaves – 1 Cup (A Bunch – Cleaned and roughly chopped)
  • Salt as needed.

To Temper

  • Mustard/Kadugu – 1/4 tsp.
  • Urad dal – 1 tbsp.
  • Curry leaves – A Spring(Optional)

METHOD

  • Chop onion and grate coconut.
  • Get all your ingredients ready.
  • Add oil in a pan and temper mustard and allow it to splutter.
  • Now add urad dal allow it to brown and then add a pinch of hing.
  • Add curry leaves and then green chilies.
  • Now add onion and saute for few mins until they become translucent.
  • Then add the grated coconut and sauté until a nice aroma comes.
  • Now switch off the stove and add the chopped Coriander leaves and mix everything well.
  • Wait till the mixture cools down. Transfer the contents into s blender and blend everything along with little water, tamarind paste and salt in the blender.
  • Check the taste and then transfer the chutney to a bowl.
  • Serve the chutney with Idly/Dosa.

Note : I like to add little more Urad Dal while saute’ing onion as it gives a great taste. Adding curry leaves while sautéing is just a healthy notch.

Sauté the coconut till it emits a nice aroma.

You can chop the onion thin so that it gets cooked easily. The onion need not be sauted well, it can be cooked for few mins.

Can add a tomato instead of adding tamarind paste. I like a nice green that’s why didn’t add tomatoes.

Do add the chili one by one, check the spiciness and then add if needed, while blending.

You can temper in the end if you like it that way. Or this step can be omitted and tempered in the beginning itself.

Can add more Coriander also. No need to cook them.

    1. That’s the difficult task. Need to cook new recipes for the blog and need to reduce kgs also. Very contrasting subjects but I try to do justice to both. Hehe. That’s the difficulty of a food blogger. 😂😂. Wish someone would cook and serve for me. Thanks a lot for that thought Nisthur. 👍🏼

      1. Since I will learn everything from you , being a Guru , I will offer first serving to you.

Yeah it’s really difficult, food and body weight justifying both is really tough task indeed.

That’s the struggle but you are winner !😊
